Automatic MikroTik backups every night, and replacing a dead router

Last updated: 19 October 2026

A router dies on a tower at night and nobody has its settings. RadiusNest saves every connected MikroTik's configuration every night, keeps it for 30 days, and gives you the steps to put it on a new router.

How it works

  • Every night RadiusNest asks each router for its configuration (a text export, the same as /export) and keeps it, encrypted.
  • A night with no changes keeps the earlier copy, so the list shows the days something really changed.
  • Copies are kept for 30 days; the newest one is always kept.
  • Press Back up now any time, and Download any copy as an .rsc file.
  • The file is taken off the router again, so it never fills the router's storage.

Replacing a dead router

  1. Download the newest backup.
  2. On the new MikroTik: System > Reset Configuration with No Default Configuration ticked.
  3. Drag the .rsc into Files and import it from New Terminal.
  4. Paste the router's RadiusNest setup script again - it shows up as the same router.
  5. Type in again what a backup never holds: Wi-Fi passwords, the password of a PPPoE uplink, and the router's own users.

A different model may have other port names; the page explains how to adjust them.

Passwords stay on the router

RadiusNest's login on the router has no right to read passwords and keys, so they are never in a backup and never leave the router.

Questions

How often are MikroTik backups taken?

Every night, automatically, for every connected router whose RadiusNest login may make changes. You can also press Back up now.

How long are backups kept?

30 days. A night with no changes keeps the earlier copy, and the newest copy is always kept.

Are passwords in the backup?

No. RadiusNest's login on the router cannot read passwords and keys, so they are never in a backup. You type Wi-Fi and uplink passwords in again on a new router.

Does it work on RouterOS 6 and 7?

Yes, on both.

What does it cost?

Included with every RadiusNest account, the free trial too.
