How to reset a MikroTik router

Last updated: 2 October 2026

A reset erases the configuration and returns the router to its default state. It is the only way back in after a lost password, and the cleanest start before importing a saved configuration.

A reset deletes everything on the router, including hotspot users and PPPoE secrets stored on it. Save a backup first if you can still log in.

Reset with a command

Back to the factory default configuration:

/system reset-configuration

Completely empty, with no default configuration (use this before importing an export file):

/system reset-configuration no-defaults=yes skip-backup=yes

After an empty reset the router has no IP address. Connect with Winbox by MAC address (how).

Reset with the button

  1. Unplug the power.
  2. Hold the reset button.
  3. Plug the power in while still holding.
  4. Release when the USR or ACT light starts flashing (about 5 seconds).

Holding longer does other things: the light turns solid for CAP mode at about 10 seconds, and goes off for Netinstall mode at about 15 seconds. If you held too long, start again.

If the router does not start at all

Netinstall is MikroTik's tool for reinstalling RouterOS from a computer over the first network port. Use it when a reset does not help or the router keeps restarting.

Where RadiusNest fits

If your users and packages are in RadiusNest, a reset costs you nothing but the router settings: paste the router's command again and every customer, voucher and balance is back.

Questions and answers

Does a reset remove the RouterOS licence?

No. The licence stays with the device.

Does a reset downgrade RouterOS?

No. The installed version stays; only the configuration is erased.

The reset button does nothing. Why?

The button must be held before power is connected and released when the light flashes. On some models the reset is a small hole or a pad on the board.
